Originally from the UK, self-taught wildlife artist Robin Wingrave has had a lifelong passion for the natural world. His first works represented the rare, nocturnal mammals of far north Queensland’s tropical rainforests near his home in Cairns. Since settling in the north, Robin has spent countless hours ascending into the rainforest canopy or spotlighting from the rainforest floor. This dedication in representing his subjects in their natural habitat reflects in his fine work.
In 2000, and again in 2002, Robin travelled to the United States where his work was exhibited in San Diego, Oregon, Rhode Island and Seattle. His unique lecture series was a huge success, showing not only his detailed sketches, but also a video presentation encompassing his rainforest exploration and his involvement with the rescue and rehabilitation of the local wildlife.
Exhibiting at the 18th World Primatological Conference in Adelaide in 2001 led to a turning point in Robin’s art career and his current work now focuses on the world’s primate species. Through his art he hopes to contribute to the conservation of not only the Silvery Gibbons, but all of our endangered primates.
